How to Change Battery in VW Key

Conducting a VW key battery replacement is quite straightforward— you can do right in your Des Moines home. Of course, if you’d prefer to stop by the dealership, we’d be happy to change battery in VW key fob parts for you! Either way, here’s how you or a VW technician would swap out a VW key fob battery:

  1. Acquire the proper battery. Older models with a traditional VW key fob will most likely need a CR1632 battery from a local Waukee hardware or car parts store. Newer VW models take a CR2032.
  2. Press the button to remove the auxiliary key from the VW key fob.
  3. Now, hold the VW key fob firmly in your hand. Feel for the crease separating the front and back parts of the fob housing. Wedge a small screwdriver in the crease to pry the case apart. Pro tip: cover the end of the screwdriver in a small piece of electrical tape to prevent scratching the VW key fob housing.
  4. Next, perform the VW key battery replacement. Simply remove the dead battery and place the new battery in its place, positive side down.
  5. Press the VW key fob battery housing back together. You’ll hear a click when it’s successfully rejoined.
  6. Replace the traditional key to it’s position.
  7. Now you know how to change battery in VW key fob devices!
