2024 Volkswagen ID. Buzz

From the Volkswagen ID.4 to the ID.7 to the ID.Buzz, the automaker’s lineup offers a number of world-class electric vehicles to elevate every Des Moines and Waukee drive. It’s no secret that keeping your vehicle properly charged is an essential part of EV ownership—but what are the three EV charging levels? Volkswagen of Des Moines gives you the answer below in this overview of EV chargers and J1772 and Combined Charging System connectors.

What Are the Three EV Charging Levels?

Let’s begin with the most pressing question: exactly what are the three EV charging levels? Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3, or DC Fast Charging, are your three options. Levels 1 and 2 utilize alternating electrical current, while Level 3 uses direct current, and each charging level delivers different charge times. Here are some important things to know about all your options, including whether they take a J1772 connector or a Combined Charging System connector.

Level 1 Charging

  • Uses a 120-volt household outlet, a charging cord with a standard plug-in, and a J1772 connector
  • Commonly found in homes since Level 1 chargers need no special installation
  • Perfect for topping off your charge; for EVs that don’t put on a lot of miles during the course of their daily driving; and for PHEVs, which have smaller batteries
  • Takes about 83 hours for a full charge

Level 2 Charging

  • Uses a 240-volt outlet and J1772 connector
  • Available at public charging stations around West Des Moines or professionally installed in the home
  • Ideal for overnight charging
  • Takes around 7.5 to 11.5 hours for a full charge

Level 3 Charging /DC Fast Charging

  • Because of their significant power demands, Level 3 chargers are only available at public stations
  • Most non-Tesla fast chargers require an SAE Combined Charging System connector
  • Goes from a five to 80% charge in around 38 minutes
